School-aged children living in the city of Athens are served by Athens City Schools, a public school district. Comprised of Athens Elementary School, Brookhill Elementary School, James L. Cowart Elementary School and Julian Newman Elementary School, Athens Middle School, Athens Intermediate School, and Athens High School, this school district holds an outstanding reputation for academic excellence and for providing a safe and healthy learning environment for its students and teachers. Currently, almost 3,000 students are enrolled within the district, with 210 full-time teachers serving the educational needs of students. For parochial and private school options, Faith Christian Academy and Athens Bible School are ready to serve the needs of students.

The city of Athens is home to Athens State University, the state's only public two-year upper level university. Other nearby universities and colleges include Calhoun Community College, Auburn University, University of Alabama – Huntsville, Alabama A&M University, and University of North Alabama.

Economy & Job Market

As part of the "Metroplex," an area that encompasses Huntsville, Decatur, Athens, and Madison, residents are exposed to a number of employment opportunities in some of the most respected industries, including Technical, Aerospace, Manufacturing, and Defense. In fact, it's noted that more engineers per capita live within the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area than anywhere else in the country. Some major employers within the area include Athens-Limestone Hospital, Boeing, Toyota, Cummings Research Park, ADTRAN, Calhoun Community College System, Marshall Space Flight Center, TVA, and Vulcan Materials Company, among many others. The city will quickly experience another spurt of economic growth once the Rocket Launch Program, a joint venture between Lockheed-Martin and Boeing, is complete. Additionally, NASA and Redstone Arsenal will continue its expansion, housing the Army Aviation Command and further contributing to Athens' economy.

Parks & Recreation

Residents have plenty to do when it comes to outdoor recreation. Run by the City of Athens Parks and Recreation Department, the Athens Sportsplex features eight baseball fields, softball fields, five soccer fields, a swimming pool, 15 athletic fields, four playgrounds, and a domino hall. The Parks and Recreation Department also oversees five city parks: 5th Avenue Park, Big Springs Park, Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park, Swan Creek Park, and The Wellness Park.

Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the Tennessee River in North Alabama features some of the best fishing in the country, with largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, sauger, bream, spotted bass, catfish, stripe and crappie swimming up and down the river to the delight of fishermen everywhere! The Tennessee and Elk Rivers also serve as popular spots for water skiing, boating, and swimming. Nearby Joe Wheeler State Park is an excellent area for explorers to check out and observe the local wildlife, including deer and eagle.
